Asia’s B2C e-commerce market continued to accelerate during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020

The B2C e-commerce market in Asia experienced significant growth during the coronavirus pandemic and was expected to continue its leadership in other regions of the world. China maintains its role as regional and global leader in the share of total retail sales attributed to e-commerce.

Moreover, due to the shift in consumer shopping behavior towards online shopping, many e-commerce platforms have generated considerable revenue since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. There were several major players in the online market, Amazon, JD.com, Pinduoduo, Shopee, Lazada were among them. These platforms have recorded a significant number of sales, a large influx of new consumers and an increasing number of visits in the last 6 months of 2020.

Moreover, to contribute to the development of e-commerce, some companies have received investments and thus increased their market value. Many e-commerce platforms have also increased their cross-border sales, by operating overseas and introducing foreign retailers to their platform.

The downward trend in online travel segment GMV is expected to gradually recover from 2021 to 2025

Although the internet economy overall has seen an increase in value, the gross merchandise value of online travel has declined significantly in 2020, even by more than 50% in some countries. That said, the value of this sector is still expected to gain momentum and gradually grow by 2025.
