FUTA commissions state-of-the-art cybersecurity lab

The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has commissioned its state-of-the-art cybersecurity laboratory.

The inauguration of the establishment took place on the sidelines of the 40th anniversary and the 32nd graduation ceremony of the institution held on November 26th.

A statement from FUTA spokesman Adegbenro Adebanjo said the lab is equipped with 30 desktop computers, two smart TVs, three switches, a projector, a server and a rack of server, which has a fiber optic backbone connection.

The lab is also equipped with high-end facilities to collect data on cyber threats and attacks. State-of-the-art lab facilities also include computers with Windows and Linux operating systems installed with contemporary cybersecurity training software.

It also fully installed Visual Studio Code, Oracle Virtual Box, MATLAB, Metasploiltable, DVWA, Kali Linux, Linux Mint, Packet Tacer running on personal computers, Mr. Adebanjo said.

An information and cybersecurity professor at the institution, Kayode Alese, described the lab as the main test bed in Nigeria whose facilities would be used to train the next generation of cybersecurity experts.

The lab, which requires biometric authentication before users can access the facilities, also houses the departmental library where volumes of very recent books and research material can be viewed, the professor said.

Prof Alese said the lab came into being thanks to friends of the department together with the university leadership and to department staff coordinated by department head Dr Aderonke Thompson. Friends of the Department have made generous individual and corporate donations.

FUTA Vice-Chancellor Joseph Fuwape speaking at the commissioning, performed by Chancellor, Emir of Katagum, Umar Faruk II, and in the presence of Chancellor and Chairman of the Board, Godknows Igali, described the lab as a Center of Excellence for undergraduate and postgraduate students that will enhance teaching, learning, and research in cybersecurity studies.
