For three generations, the Hacker family have lived on this land at Old Town Superior.
“It used to be our main bathroom,†said Caroline Hacker, examining what’s left of their house and their stepfather’s house. “It’s so devastated. It’s all so gone.”
The fireplace built by Courtland Hacker’s grandfather is one of the only things left standing after Marshall’s fire ravaged their property.
Their family home was destroyed in the 2013 floods and completely rebuilt.
“I can’t imagine going through another disaster,†Caroline said. “Really, it’s one day at a time.”
Denver7 Gives’ generous donations allow viewers to make that day a little easier one day at a time. All of the family’s electronic devices – their computers, tablets and phone chargers – burned down in the fire.
“When I was told you had to go now, I was like, ‘What do I need for the next few hours of my life?'” Caroline recalled. “No, ‘What do I need for the rest of my life ?'”
Not having electronic devices made it difficult to fill out the forms needed for insurance, federal aid, and labor.
“These days there are a lot of things you can do on an iPhone. But again, there are a lot of forms that we have to fill out, but I couldn’t do it through my phone,†he said. Caroline declared. “So I had to find who had a computer that I could use, and that added a lot of work to the one we already have.”
So Denver7 Gives took them shopping to lighten some of that load and bring back some sense of normalcy.
“The kid can’t watch his favorite show before bed because we don’t have our iPad,†Caroline said. “Getting back to something normal, you know, it’s necessary, and it’s just useful.”
Their insurance won’t be anywhere near replacing their home and everything they’ve lost inside.
Denver7 Gives also donated $ 200 in Amazon gift cards to help them move into their new rental home on Monday. Caroline says she makes a mental list of the things she will need.
“A blender, a coffee maker, plates and cups,” she said. “Thank you very much. There is so much justification for giving up now. Having this opportunity to receive is really what offers hope to move forward.”
Moving forward with the support of their community and the strength that has held them on for generations, Hackers are gearing up for the sequel.
“Thanks to all of the viewers who donated,†Courtland Hacker said. “The big question in my mind is, will everything be okay? And for you guys, making us feel like it’s gonna be a little more okay.”
