Hand-painted maps by James Niehues that have guided skiers and snowboarders for more than three decades at popular winter resorts.

Driving the news: This work is now available on a pair of custom boards made by Colorado-based ski brand Wagner Skis.

Why is this important: The skis are some of the most beautiful we have ever seen and a rightful tribute to the resident of Parker who is known as “the Rembrandt of the snow”.

Between the lines: Niehues’ tedious work painting the slopes, cliffs and trees that guide skiers is captured in a new book, “The Man Behind the Maps”, which inspired the designs.

  • The book – featuring the writing of Jason Blevins of the Colorado Sun – includes more than 200 mountain maps he made, and the collection is more impressive than ever in an era of mostly computer-drawn guidebooks.
